Mark G. Boyer What is Born of the Spirit is Spirit

What is Born of the Spirit is Spirit provides reflections on Scripture texts associated with (Holy) Spirit and (human) spirit. Various aspects of Spirit and spirit are explored in one-hundred-five entries. The subtitle, A Biblical Spirituality of Spirit, indicates the ways biblical authors are inspired to present imaginatively what cannot be pictured: Spirit and spirit. This book attempts to recover the spirituality of biblical stories that narrate how the Spirit connects to spirit and the results of such connectivity. By exploring the use of biblical metaphors and similes we develop a spirituality of Spirit, the way human spirit is in the presence of the divine Spirit. Spirituality is Spirit connecting to spirit. It is Spirit giving birth to spirit (John 3:6).

Susan Connell Rebel's Spirit

Donald L. Alexander The Humanity of Christ and the Healing of the Dysfunction of the Human Spirit

The book represents a personal quest in what Anselm referred to as faith seeking understanding. The primary focus centers on proposing an interpretation of the nature and function of the human spirit and its relationship to the divine spirit and the living of a godly Christian life. Thus the book has a dual concern; namely, an academic one and a spiritual one. The undergirding premise is that apart of the human spirit the divine spirit is personally unknowable.
This premise contains the following supporting concepts: First, the core of human personhood resides in the human spirit and constitutes the unique capacity for personal self-relatedness. Second, as the result of humanity's idolatrous displacement of God, a radical reversal occurred with the human spirit. When restored to its original relationship with the divine spirit, the human spirit, as James Loder writes "is called out of its futility and perversity into the light (and truth) of the divine spirit.

Walter Brueggemann Truth-Telling as Subversive Obedience

"Those who serve as truth-tellers in the church, like those who listen to the truth-telling in the church, are a mix of yearning and fearfulness, of receptiveness and collusion. In the end, the work of truth-telling is not to offer a new package of certitudes that displaces old certitudes. This truth to be uttered and acted, rather, is the enactment and conveyance of this Person who is truth, so that truth comes as bodily fidelity that stays reliably present to the pain of the world." –from the Preface

Susan Williams Truth, Autonomy, and Speech

Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Titles 2005 WinnerAmidst the vast array of literature on the First Amendment, it is rare to hear a fresh voice speak about the First Amendment, but in Truth, Autonomy, and Speech , Susan H. Williams presents a strikingly original interpretation and defense of the First Amendment, written from a feminist perspective. Drawing on work from several disciplines—including law, political theory, philosophy, and anthropology—the book develops alternative accounts of truth and autonomy as the foundations for freedom of expression. Building on feminist understandings of self and the social world, Williams argues that both truth and autonomy are fundamentally relational. With great clarity and insight, Williams demonstrates that speech is the means by which we create rather than discover truth and the primary mechanism through which we tell the stories that constitute our autonomy. She examines several controversial issues in the law of free speech—including campaign finance reform, the public forum doctrine, and symbolic speech—and concludes that the legal doctrine through which we interpret and apply the First Amendment should be organized to protect speech that serves the purposes of truth and autonomy.

Father Ralph Wright The Eloquence of Truth

In The Eloquence of Truth, Ralph Wright, OSB uses poetry, prose and authoritative teaching to address such egregious issues as abortion, euthanasia, and slavery. Using these art forms, he make readers aware of Truth and how that truth affects our freedom in every day life. Truth alone, he stresses, can guarantee respect for the inalienable dignity and rights of each man, woman and child in our world – including the most defenseless of all human beings, the unborn child in the mother's womb. His main message in Eloquence is to show us the immeasurable value of each human being in the eyes of God, and he prays that fellow human beings will realize the truth about the 'almost divine dignity' of humankind, also realizing that this dignity subsists in us from the moment we are conceived.

Charles M. Wood Love That Rejoices in the Truth

Love, says the apostle Paul, «does not rejoice over injustice, but rejoices in the truth» (1 Corinthians 13:6). The theological explorations undertaken here all deal in one way or another with the liberating promise and the perplexing problem of truth in Christian life and witness, and with the ways that Christian theology and theological education in their various modes struggle both to seek the truth and to foster the aptitude to honor it.

Yuzo Adhinarta The Doctrine of the Holy Spirit in the Major Reformed Confessions and Catechisms of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries

With the rise of Pentecostalism in the early twentieth century and growth in the charismatic movement since, a resurgence of interest in the Holy Spirit and Christian spirituality in both theology and the church’s life has become evident. Along with increased interest in the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, there are criticisms of the treatment of the doctrine in church history for having neglected the Holy Spirit in both theology and the church’s life. Critical studies of the treatments of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in church history have been laboriously conducted. However, there have not been many studies on the doctrine of the Holy Spirit in Reformed orthodoxy, particularly in its confessional standards.
Recognizing the gap in the history of scholarship, this work explores and provides a systematic account of the person and some aspects of the work of the Holy Spirit as presented in the major Reformed confessions and catechisms of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Attention is particularly given to those aspects of the work of the Holy Spirit that have not been greatly explored but are pertinent to contemporary discussions.

Chukwuemeka Livingstone My Black Biblical Heritage

Truth is constant. Truth does not change, neither does it have variables. However, the truth referred here is that which the bible teaches. It is the truth of salvation which is man’s reconciliation and restoration after the fall. This truth is found in John 14:6. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. No man can come to GOD without going by him and through him. It is the knowledge of this truth that a man can be made free. When a man gives his life to Jesus Christ, he comes into the truth. To stay in the truth, he has to live in obedience to God’s Word through study that gives knowledge in the love of God. This knowledge in turn builds faith, and faith gives boldness that maketh not ashamed. This boldness confirms in him freedom and expresses same outside because of the understanding that the greater one lives in him. Any other truth apart from Christ is relative and subject to variations based on culture, legal interpretations, social conceptions and misconceptions, societal values and even political or religious views. We preach Christ, The Son of God…HE IS THE TRUTH.

The work explores how an individual with a mature spirit can be of use to God in spiritual warfare. There is also some comparison between the concepts of spirit developed from the Bible and those held by major faiths and major branches of the Christian church.

Susan Owens Spirit of Place

Leopoldo A. Sánchez Receiver, Bearer, and Giver of God’s Spirit

What difference does the Spirit make in the life of Jesus and in our lives? Answering that question without doing away with the divine dignity of Christ has been a challenge in the distant and recent past. But this need not be the case. The current work is a contribution to the growing field of Spirit Christology, which seeks to enrich the classic Logos Christology of the ecumenical Councils with a Spirit-oriented trajectory. Sanchez tests the productivity of a Spirit Christology as a theological lens for assessing the main events of Jesus' life and mission, accounts of the atonement, the significance of the incarnation, the concepts of person and relation, and models of the Trinity. Seeing Christ as the privileged locus of the Spirit also has implications for the church's life in the Spirit. Sanchez shows how a Spirit Christology fosters Christian practices such as proclamation, prayer, and sanctification. Among the highlights of this work the reader will note the author's assessment of early church fathers' readings of the place of the Spirit in the anointing of Jesus, a constructive proposal towards the complementarity of Logos and Spirit Christologies, ecumenical engagement with various theological traditions in the East and the West, and the first constructive assessment of the field informed by the Lutheran tradition.
